#’Love Jihad’ bill passed by Gujarat Assembly, provides for 10 years imprisonment

Before Gujarat, BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have also implemented the ‘Love Jihad’ law.

The Love Jihad Bill has been passed in Gujarat: The Gujarat Assembly on Thursday passed a bill to stop ‘love jihad’. The bill provides for up to ten years in prison for forcible conversion after marriage. The bill amends a 2003 law that punishes conversion by force or greed. According to the government, the Gujarat Religious Freedom (Amendment) Bill, 2021 (Conversion Amendment Bill 2021) has provisions to stop the rising trend where women have entered into marriage with the intention of conversion. Let us tell you that the BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have also had ‘Love Jihad’ laws in place before. According to the amendment, marriage or forcible conversion by marrying or helping someone can result in imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of up to Rs 200,000. If the victim is a minor, female Dalit or tribal, the convict can be sentenced to four to seven years imprisonment and a fine of at least three lakh rupees. If an organization violates the law, the person responsible can be sentenced to a minimum of three years and a maximum of ten years in prison. The bill was approved after a day-long debate in the Gujarat Assembly. During the discussion on the bill, Leader of the Opposition Paresh Dhanani said that love does not show religion and caste. The Congress leader said there is no limit to love. It does not show religion or caste. It’s a feeling and there should be no barriers to it. Congress MLA Imran Khedawala tore up the bill, saying it was anti-minority. BJP members demanded that Speaker Rajendra Trivedi should take action against them. However, Khedawala apologized, after which the chairman did not take any action against him.
