India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Canadian partner Denis Shapovalov advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the Italian Open tennis tournament. In the first round match played on Wednesday, Bopanna and Shapolov’s unbeaten pair defeated Chilean Christian Garin and Argentina’s Guido Pella 4-4, 6-4 in straight sets.
Bopanna and Shapovalov will face top-seeded Juan Juan Sebastian Kabal and Robert Farah to advance to the Copa final. Bopanna and Shapovalov reached the quarterfinals of the last Grand Slam US Open of the year, which ended last week.
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, one of the world’s top players, and three-time Grand Slam winner Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka advanced to the first round of the Italian Open tennis tournament after winning consecutive sets on Wednesday. 18-year-old Lorenzo Museti has suffered a crushing defeat in a drawn set.
Top seed Djokovic defeated Salvatore Caruso of Italy -3-3–2-2 in the second round. Djokovic got a goodbye in the first round. Djokovic had his first match on the ground court after losing to Austria’s Dominic Thiem in the semifinals of the French Open last year. Djokovic had his 51st win in 60 matches at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
