He said, “In 2018, he sent me upstairs in a match. He thought I could bat and promoted me. I scored some 40 runs in that match. After that, I didn’t get much chance. So I was waiting for my chance.”
Chahar got this opportunity in the second ODI against Sri Lanka, when chasing a target of 276, he played an unbeaten 69 for Team India to win.
Regarding this, he said, “Finally I got an opportunity and I took advantage of it. When I landed wearing the pads, I saw wickets were falling and the next number was mine. Usually, as a batsman you think ‘I want to win this match’. That’s what I’ve been trying to do my whole life.”
Chahar further said, “That day I was not thinking about winning the match, I was only thinking about playing all the overs so that we can take the match as close as we can. And when the match comes to a close, anything can happen. After that innings Dhoni messaged me and said ‘well played’. That was a good moment for me.”
