The performance of the Kolkata Knight Riders has so far been mixed in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League. Last season, the team led by Dinesh Karthik failed to reach the playoffs and are in fifth place at the end of the tournament. This season, the KKR team, under the captaincy of Dinesh Karthik, played four matches, winning four and losing three. Before the match against Mumbai Indians, Dinesh Karthik handed over the captaincy of the team to England’s world champion Captain Ein Morgan. This is the ninth time in the history of the IPL that a captain has left the captaincy in the middle of the tournament.
Leaving the captaincy in the middle of the IPL, the first season of this tournament started. Former India batsman VVS Laxman is the first captain to relinquish the captaincy in the middle of the tournament. Laxman was leading the Deccan charge that season and Adam Gilchrist was named as the new captain. Subsequently, once in 2012, the Deccan Charges team changed their captaincy during the middle tournament. Kumar Sangakkara, who was leading the team at the time, was given the captaincy by Cameron White.
Mumbai Indians, the most successful team in the IPL, have also changed their captaincy during the mid-term tournament. In 2013, the team snatched the captaincy from Ricky Ponting and made Rohit Sharma the new captain. Similarly, in 2015, Steve Smith removed Shane Watson from the captaincy and made the Rajasthan Royals the new captain. In 2019, Rajasthan Royals captained Steve Smith with Ajinkya Rahane. Dinesh Karthik has resigned as captain of the beach tournament and has become the new captain of the Morgan Beach season.
