Both Armenia and Azerbaijan were part of the former Soviet Union. However, after the break-up of the Soviet Union, both countries became independent. After the separation, there was a dispute between the two countries over the Nagrono-Karabakh region. Both countries assert their authority over it. Although the 4400 sq km area is declared as Azerbaijan under international law, it has a large population of Armenian descent.

For this reason, the conflict between the two countries has been going on since 1991. A ceasefire was reached between the two countries in 1994 through Russian mediation, but sporadic fighting has been going on between the two countries ever since. Since then, there has been a ‘line of communication’ between the two countries. However, the situation has worsened since July this year. This region is also known as Artasakh.
