Armenia-Azerbaijan will try to reduce current tensions: Donald Trump

The U.S. State Department has issued a statement urging Armenia and Azerbaijan to implement an immediate and effective ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, saying there would be no benefit to any third party involved in the conflict and the situation. Could be worse. Turkey has announced its support for Azerbaijan.

The United States urges both sides to cooperate with the OSCE Minsk Group and to begin negotiations as soon as possible. Several other organizations, including the United Nations, have called on both countries to implement the ceasefire immediately and effectively.

Earlier on Sunday, Armenian and Azerbaijani forces clashed over the occupation of a territory in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Armenia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement that 11 of its troops had been killed and more than 100 wounded in clashes with Azerbaijani forces in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Poshnayin tweeted that Azerbaijan had attacked Artasakh with a missile, damaging residential areas. According to Poshnayen, Armenia retaliated by killing two Azerbaijani helicopters, three UAVs and two tanks. The Armenian prime minister has since imposed martial law in the country.

Both Armenia and Azerbaijan were part of the former Soviet Union. However, after the break-up of the Soviet Union, both countries became independent. After the separation, there was a dispute between the two countries over the Nagrono-Karabakh region. Both countries assert their authority over it. Although the 4400 sq km area is declared as Azerbaijan under international law, it has a large population of Armenian descent.
