Trinamool Congress leader Saayoni Ghosh detained for questioning in Tripura

Tripura Police on Sunday detained West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress leader Sayani Ghosh for questioning following a complaint by a ruling BJP worker.

West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress leader Sayani Ghosh was arrested by Tripura Police on Sunday following a complaint by a ruling BJP worker. (Saayoni Ghosh) was taken into custody for questioning. A BJP worker has accused Ghosh of disrupting a street meeting of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday night, an official said. Trinamool Congress’s West Bengal unit youth wing secretary Sayani Ghosh has been detained 24 hours before Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s visit. Ghosh was called to the police station for questioning. Trinamool Congress leaders alleged that their workers were thrashed by BJP supporters outside the East Agartala Mahila Police Station. In a tweet, Banerjee accused the BJP government of Tripura of not complying with the Supreme Court orders on the rights of political parties to peacefully protest. Banerjee shared the video of the alleged attack on Sunday morning on Twitter and hit out at Chief Minister Biplab Deb, saying, “Instead of ensuring the safety of our supporters and women candidates, he is continuously sending goons to attack.” The ruling BJP in Tripura is making fun of democracy. The Supreme Court had recently directed the Tripura Police to ensure that no political party is denied the right to campaign in a peaceful manner. Police said that during the interrogation of Ghosh, a group of people gathered outside the police station was attacked by some unidentified miscreants. However, no one was hurt in the attack.

Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Sushmita Deb told reporters, “Our candidates were beaten up, their homes ransacked and no action was taken despite complaints. The police is working here in a one-sided manner. Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh said that the kind of democracy in Tripura, “we will ask our leaders to do the same in West Bengal (along with the BJP).”

BJP’s Tripura unit spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya denied the allegations and said that BJP workers never attacked any Trinamool Congress supporter as the party does not consider it a political rival.
