In a special meeting with political leaders elected by the central government on Wednesday, the opposition discussed in parliament four key issues – the Goods and Services Tax (GST), jobs and the economy, the National Education Policy (NEP) and the draft Environmental Impact Assessment Policy. The meeting was chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and was attended by representatives of Congress, Trinamool Congress, Jatiya Janata Dal, Samajwadi Party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Telangana Rashtra Samiti and Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Congress leaders said a second meeting would be held on Friday or Saturday, where the issue of Indo-China military stalemate could be placed next to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the East Ladakh sector. A Congress leader who attended the meeting said on condition of anonymity, “We will first listen to Rajnath Singh and then decide on our next strategy.”

Rajnath Singh had told the leaders that he would make a statement in the Rajya Sabha on the Indo-China border issue at 12 noon on Thursday, but the government was not in favor of a public debate on the issue.

Wednesday’s meeting was a rare example of opposition explanations on controversial issues. Opposition leaders have been called in to discuss the issue at hand. In November 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then ministers Arun Jaitley and M Venkaiah Naidu worked with Congress President Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to find a way to pass the GST bill.

Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections. He, however, demanded that the three agriculture-related bills and banking control amendments be sent to the selected panels for review. The government manager does not agree though.

Congress leaders have been demanding a debate on the economy and job losses at the meeting, and Rajya Sabha chief whip in parliament, former environment minister Jairam Ramesh, has been pushing for a debate on the environment.
