Ten more arrested for attack on Hindu temple in Pakistan, more than 350 named in FIR

Police have arrested ten more people during an overnight operation led by members of a radical Islamist group involved in the sabotage of a Hindu temple in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. With this, the number of accused arrested in this case has increased to 55

Some people vandalized and set fire to a temple extension work in Terry village in Karak district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday. More than 350 people have been named in the FIR registered with the incident. The other accused, whose names are in the FIR, are being sought.

This temple was the tomb of a Hindu religious leader. The Hindu community sought permission from local authorities to renovate the decades-old building of the temple. Led by local clerics and supporters of the Jamiat-e-Ulama Islam-Party (Fazal-ur-Rehman group), the mob tore down the old structure and demolished new ones.

Human rights activists and leaders of the minority Hindu community have strongly condemned the attack on the temple. India has also protested to Pakistan over the temple vandalism and demanded strict action against the perpetrators. Sources in New Delhi on Friday said a protest against Pakistan had been reported through diplomatic channels. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s foreign office on Saturday termed India’s opposition to the sabotage of a Hindu temple as completely inappropriate.
