India has asked Pakistan to ensure speedy release of Indian prisoners

On Friday, India asked Pakistan to release and return 185 Indian prisoners and three civilian prisoners whose citizenship has already been confirmed and informed Pakistani authorities. In addition, the foreign ministry said Pakistan had been asked to provide immediate diplomatic access to 22 Indian prisoners and detainees, who were believed to be Indians.

The request came from the perspective of exchanging lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen between the two countries. Under the 2006 Framework Agreement, the two countries exchange such lists on the first day of each year. In the wake of the Kovid-19 epidemic, India has asked Pakistan to ensure the safety and welfare of all Indian citizens and prisoners considered Indian citizens and fishermen.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that India had submitted a list of two Pakistani nationals in custody and 77 detainees in Indian custody. Similarly, Pakistan has also submitted a list of 49 civilian prisoners and fishermen who are in the same captivity and are believed to be Indians. The ministry said that in this regard, Pakistan has been asked to release and return 185 Indian prisoners and three civilian prisoners whose citizenship has already been confirmed and the Pakistani authorities have been informed.

It said the government had asked Pakistan to issue visas to a team of medical experts and expedite their arrival in Pakistan, which would look into the mental state of Indian prisoners in various Pakistani jails. The statement said that a joint visit of the Joint Judicial Committee to Pakistan has also been proposed soon.
