A big deal for the purchase of 56 C-295 aircraft was signed between the Ministry of Defense and Airbus Defense and Space of Spain

New Delhi: The Defense Ministry on Friday finalized the deal for 56 military transport aircraft. The Ministry of Defense and Airbus Defense and Space Spain today signed a contract for the purchase of 56 C-295 aircraft for the Indian Air Force. The Defense Ministry has signed an Airbus-Tata deal worth about Rs 20,000 crore to buy 56 C-295 transport aircraft in place of the Air Force’s Avro-748 aircraft. Also Read – PM Modi meets Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison ahead of Quad Summit in US

The Cabinet Committee on Defense Affairs had approved this long-pending purchase two weeks ago. Under the deal, 16 aircraft in flyby condition will be provided by Spain’s Airbus Defense and Space within 48 months of the signing of the contract.

Officials said the remaining 40 aircraft will be manufactured in India jointly by Airbus Defense and Space and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) within 10 years of the signing of the contract.

The C-295MW aircraft is a 5-10 tonne transport aircraft. This is the first project of its kind, in which military aircraft will be manufactured in India by a private company.
