Ranjit Singh Murder Case: A special CBI court in Panchkula has deferred to October 18 the verdict on the conviction of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and four others in a murder case. The special court had on Friday convicted them in the murder case of Dera manager Ranjit Singh. CBI Special Public Prosecutor HPS Verma told reporters outside the court in Panchkula that the arguments on the sentence were completed by the CBI and the defense lawyers. The counsel for some of the convicts, seeking time, said that they want to look into some of the points put forth by the prosecution. On his request, the court adjourned the matter till October 18. Tight security arrangements were made in and around the court premises. Police also beefed up security in Panchkula and Sirsa, where the Dera Sacha Sauda headquarters are located, in view of the likely punishment by the court on Tuesday. The Dera chief appeared in the court through video conference, while the other four convicts were present in the court. Singh has been in jail since his conviction in 2017 for raping two followers. Another accused in the murder case had died a year ago. Former Dera manager Ranjit Singh was shot dead in 2002. He was murdered for his suspected role in circulating an anonymous letter. In this letter it was told how the Dera chief sexually exploits women in the Dera headquarters.
According to the CBI chargesheet, the Dera chief believed that Ranjit Singh was behind the circulation of this anonymous letter and hatched a conspiracy to kill him. Gurmeet Ram Rahim was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2017 for raping two followers. Two years ago, the Dera chief was also sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati.
