Highly placed sources in the party said that more than 50 MLAs have written to party president Sonia Gandhi requesting that Amarinder Singh be removed from the post of Chief Minister. It is learned that after the crisis escalated in the Punjab Pradesh Congress, Amarinder Singh also spoke to Sonia Gandhi and expressed displeasure over his repeated ‘insults’. At present, no official information has been revealed about Amarinder talking to Sonia. Sources say the crisis is “serious” as several MLAs have demanded a change of chief minister a few months before the assembly elections.
In her letter to the legislators, Sonia Gandhi demanded by calling a meeting of the legislature party. The party high command directed a meeting on Saturday evening and appointed senior leaders – Ajay Maken and Harish Choudhary – as central observers. Congress General Secretary and Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat will also be present in the legislature party meeting.
Rawat’s announcement is being seen as a signal from the high command to appoint a new office-bearer, under whose leadership the party will go to the assembly elections to be held in March 2022.
Reacting to the political developments, former state president Sunil Jakhar tweeted, “Wow Rahul Gandhi, you have figured out a way to solve the Punjabi version of a very complicated puzzle. Astonishingly, this bold decision of the leadership has not only ended the woes of the Punjab Congress, but it has mesmerized the workers and shook the foundation of the Akalis.”
The decision to call the CLP comes in the wake of a fresh letter signed by most of the MLAs, who expressed dissatisfaction with Amarinder Singh and demanded his removal from the chief minister’s post. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has reached his official residence here to meet the party MLAs before leaving for the CLP meeting. In the meeting, the Chief Minister can choose to take a tough stand in case there is a demand to change the camp.
