Hours before the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting in Punjab on Saturday, the party high command has asked Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to resign to enable the election of a new office-bearer. However, the chief minister has “threatened” to leave the party if he is humiliated. At the same time, in Delhi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has reached Chandigarh after leaving the party’s 15 GRG War Room. Congress leader Ajay Maken has reached the party office in Punjab. Let us inform that before the CLP meeting, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has called a meeting of party MLAs at 2 pm today. For this, Captain Amarinder Singh has reached his office. At the same time, a meeting of the legislature party has been called on Saturday evening at 5 pm on the instructions of the party high command in the midst of intensified tension in the Punjab unit of Congress. Senior leaders Ajay Maken and Harish Chaudhary have been appointed as central observers in the evening meeting. Congress General Secretary and Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat will also be present in the legislature party meeting. Sources said that anything can happen in this meeting of the legislature party in view of the demand of the MLAs and calling a meeting in case of emergency. If the MLAs stick to their demand, then in this meeting itself, a decision can be taken regarding the change of leadership.

According to the latest information, Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh is holding a meeting with his loyal party MLAs after reaching his official residence in Chandigarh. Some reports also said that the Congress leadership has asked Amarinder Singh to resign, however, Congress sources have refused to say anything about it.

At the same time, Ajay Maken, Congress observer for Punjab, reached Chandigarh. State Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu has welcomed him. CLP meeting is to be held for Punjab this evening. Heavy security arrangements have been made at the Punjab Congress office in Chandigarh, where a gathering of politicians and media persons is being seen.

A close confidante of the chief minister told news IANS, “Amarinder Singh spoke to Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the morning and told her that he was being humiliated and he would resign from the party.” According to some senior party leaders, the high command has clearly asked Amarinder Singh to step down.

The minute-by-minute changing political developments in the politics of Punjab began at around 11:42 am on Friday night when Punjab Congress in-charge Harish Rawat tweeted about the decision to hold an immediate CLP meeting on Saturday. After about 10 minutes, state party president Navjot Sidhu has directed all the MLAs to be present in the CLP meeting.

Highly placed sources in the party said that more than 50 MLAs have written to party president Sonia Gandhi requesting that Amarinder Singh be removed from the post of Chief Minister. It is learned that after the crisis escalated in the Punjab Pradesh Congress, Amarinder Singh also spoke to Sonia Gandhi and expressed displeasure over his repeated ‘insults’. At present, no official information has been revealed about Amarinder talking to Sonia. Sources say the crisis is “serious” as several MLAs have demanded a change of chief minister a few months before the assembly elections.

In her letter to the legislators, Sonia Gandhi demanded by calling a meeting of the legislature party. The party high command directed a meeting on Saturday evening and appointed senior leaders – Ajay Maken and Harish Choudhary – as central observers. Congress General Secretary and Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat will also be present in the legislature party meeting.

Rawat’s announcement is being seen as a signal from the high command to appoint a new office-bearer, under whose leadership the party will go to the assembly elections to be held in March 2022.

Reacting to the political developments, former state president Sunil Jakhar tweeted, “Wow Rahul Gandhi, you have figured out a way to solve the Punjabi version of a very complicated puzzle. Astonishingly, this bold decision of the leadership has not only ended the woes of the Punjab Congress, but it has mesmerized the workers and shook the foundation of the Akalis.”

The decision to call the CLP comes in the wake of a fresh letter signed by most of the MLAs, who expressed dissatisfaction with Amarinder Singh and demanded his removal from the chief minister’s post. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has reached his official residence here to meet the party MLAs before leaving for the CLP meeting. In the meeting, the Chief Minister can choose to take a tough stand in case there is a demand to change the camp.
