When he was doing his matriculation from Khalsa Senior Secondary School in Kharar, he entered politics for the first time at the same time and was elected the president of the student union. This trend continued during his graduation at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College in Chandigarh where he was elected General Secretary of the Students Union. In student life, Channi always took part in NCC, NSS and cultural activities. Born on March 1, 1963 in Chamkaur Sahib, Channi is also a trained lawyer with two master’s degrees. When he was elected MLA from Chamkaur Sahib for the first time, despite his political busyness, he took time out and did MBA from Punjab Technical University. He completed his post graduation in Political Science from Panjab University while being the leader of Congress Legislature Party in 2016.

On his return to Kharar, he started the work of tent house in which Charanjit Singh Channi also helped his father in childhood. In order to provide better education to his children, Harsa Singh had settled in Kharar from his native village Makrona Kalan.
Elder brother’s contribution in studies
His elder brother Manmohan Singh also had an indirect contribution in his upliftment academically. Manmohan Singh started a government job as an overseer and retired as a chief engineer, earning his bachelor’s, B Tech and law bachelor’s degrees along with the job. His second elder brother Dr. Manohar Singh is a medical specialist in Punjab Government and third brother Sukhwant Singh is active in politics like him. He also has two sisters, one of whom is named Surinder Kaur.
Such is the family, wife is a doctor
Known to be a family man, Channi’s wife Kamaljeet is a doctor by profession and has two children. His elder son Navjit Singh is studying law like his father. His formal political journey began in 2002 as the President of Kharar Municipal Council. He contested the 2007 assembly elections from Chamkaur Sahib constituency as a rebel Congress candidate and won as an independent. In 2012, he joined Congress and won the seat. In 2016, he was made the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly against the wishes of the camp led by Captain Amarinder Singh.
Belongs to Ramdasiya Community
Channi, who belongs to the Ramdasia community of Punjab, had long ago sounded a trumpet against former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh by saying that he should be given more representation in the cabinet in view of the widespread support of Dalits for the party. The credit for reaching the post of Chief Minister in politics goes only to Charanjit Singh Channi’s own hard work and ability.
