The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday allowed Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and three others to visit Lakhimpur. Earlier in the day, the state government had refused permission to visit Rahul Gandhi. The official spokesperson had said that no one would be allowed to go to the violence-hit district to spoil the atmosphere. Rahul Gandhi, who arrived at the Lucknow airport to go to Lakhimpur Kheri, sat on a brief dharna in the airport premises to protest against being denied permission to go to Lakhimpur in his vehicle.
When Rahul, accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Channi and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Baghel, reached Lucknow airport on Wednesday afternoon, officials allegedly asked them to go the other way in a police vehicle. Angered by this, Rahul sat on a dharna in the airport premises itself. However, after a while he left the airport and left.
Rahul said during the dharna, “We have to go in our car, but they want us to go with them in their car. I want to know why you are not letting me go. I was told earlier that you can go in your car and now I am saying that you will go in the police car. They are doing some kind of bullying.” In response to a question, he said, “Whether I should be put in jail, whether Priyanka is put in jail, it doesn’t make any sense. He said that the question is whether the criminals who should be in jail, who crushed people to death, are not being put in jail.
Rahul said, we are being prevented from meeting the families of the deceased farmers. Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh government had given conditional permission to leaders of various political parties to visit the families of victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party national general secretary will visit Lakhimpur on Thursday and meet the families of the deceased farmers.
Additional Director General of Police Law and Order Prashant Kumar told reporters on Wednesday, “The Lakhimpur Kheri district administration had banned the movement of people from the point of view of maintaining peace, but now people are allowed to go there in groups of five. Permission has been granted. Anyone who wants to go can go there.” The aim of the state government is to maintain peace and order at all costs and its intention was not to obstruct anyone’s movement. He said that whatever restrictions were imposed, they were implemented only to maintain peace and order in Lakhimpur Kheri.
Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh government allowed five leaders, including Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, to visit Lakhimpur Kheri. Navneet Sehgal, Additional Chief Secretary, Information Department, said that five Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, have been given permission to visit Lakhimpur Kheri.
