Hyderabad inaugurates 216-foot-tall ‘Statue of Equality’ in memory of Prime Minister Modi, Ramanujacharya

Statue of Equality: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the 216-foot-tall ‘Statue of Equality’ in Hyderabad. The ‘Statue of Equality’ has been erected in memory of 11th century devotee Shri Ramanujacharya.

Earlier, the Prime Minister offered prayers with Vedic mantras at a shrine located at Ramanujacharya’s temple complex in Sriramnagar. He toured the 108 Divya Desams (ornately carved temples) built on the premises. These divas are built around the ‘Statue of Equality’. The inauguration of the ‘Statue of Equality’ is part of the ongoing 1000th birth anniversary celebrations of Ramanujacharya, the 12-day celebration of Sri Ramanuja Millennium. During the ceremony, a 3D presentation mapping on the life and teachings of Saint Ramanujacharya was also served. The statue is made of ‘Panchadhatu’ which is a combination of gold, silver, copper, brass and zinc and it is one of the tallest metal statues in the world. It is built on a 54 feet high foundation building called ‘Bhadra Bedi’. The complex has a Vedic digital library and research center, ancient Indian texts, a theater, an educational gallery, reminiscent of the many works of Saint Ramanujacharya. Sri Ramanujacharya worked tirelessly for the betterment of human beings with the consciousness of every human being irrespective of race, gender, caste, creed or religion.

What is the Statue of Equality

  1. Born in Sri Perumbudur, Tamil Nadu in 1017, Sri Ramanujacharya freed millions of people from social, cultural, gender, educational and economic inequality with the basic belief that everyone is equal regardless of nationality, gender, caste, creed or religion.
  2. Sri Ramanujacharya worked tirelessly for the betterment of human beings with the consciousness of every human being irrespective of race, gender, caste, creed or religion.
  3. Saint Ramanujacharya opened the doors of the temple to all sections of society, including the victims of the highest discrimination. To social reformers around the world, he is considered a symbol of equality.
  4. The foundation stone of this project was laid in 2014. The 54-foot-tall building, called Bhadravedi, houses a Vedic digital library and research center, a multi-lingual audio tour with ancient Indian texts, a theater, an educational gallery and details of many works of Sri Ramanuja Acharya.
  5. The 216-foot outdoor Statue of Equality will be the world’s second tallest statue erected in a sitting posture.
  6. It is made of ‘Panchloha’, which is a mixture of five metals – gold, silver, copper, brass and zinc.
  7. The campus has 108 Divya Desams, 108 elaborately carved Vishnu temples, described in Alvar, the work of mystical Tamil saints.
  8. The Buddha statue in Thailand is said to be the tallest statue in the world.
  9. This idol was conceived by Sri Chinna Jaira Swami of Sri Ramanujacharya Ashram. During the event, 3D presentation mapping on the life and teachings of Saint Ramanujacharya will also be performed.
  10. The inauguration of the “Statue of Equality” is part of the ongoing 1000th birth anniversary celebrations of Ramanujacharya, the 12-day celebration of Sri Ramanuja Millennium.
