According to an official order, “The Governor of Punjab, in exercise of the power conferred under Article 165 of the Constitution, has appointed Deepinder Singh Patwalia, Senior Advocate of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana as Advocate General for the State of Punjab.” Patwalia’s name had cropped up when Charanjit Singh Channi took over as Chief Minister in September, but then APS Deol was made Advocate General. Sidhu had objected to Deol’s appointment as Deol had represented former Punjab Director General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini in court in cases related to the 2015 police firing incidents following sacrilege of the holy book. Sidhu had also given up the post of state Congress president to appoint Deol as Advocate General and Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota as Director General of Police. Sidhu had earlier laid down the conditions for appointing a new Advocate General and Director General of Police to take over the post.
