Assam By-Election: By-elections for five assembly seats in Assam will be held on October 30. The Election Commission of India made an announcement in this regard on Tuesday. The commission said that the counting of votes will take place on November 2 and the election process will be completed on November 5. Bypolls are to be held in Gosaingaon and Tamulpur due to the death of MLAs, while the seats fell vacant after legislators from Bhapanipur, Mariani and Thowra resigned to join the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The Election Commission said that the last date for filing nominations is October 8, scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on October 11 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 16. In the 126-member Assam Assembly, the ruling BJP has 60 MLAs. These seats include the seat of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha on Monday. Its ally Asom Gana Parishad and United People’s Party Liberal have nine and five MLAs respectively. Congress has 27 MLAs, AIUDF 15, Bodoland People’s Front three and Communist Marxist Party have one MLA while one is an independent.
