Aaj Ka Itihas: On this day 29 years ago Zee TV was launched. This was the country’s first satellite TV channel. It was started in 1992 by Dr. Subhash Chandra, Chairman of Essel Group. Dr. Subhash Chandra is the founder of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL). ZEEL was established on 15th December 1991, just a few months before the launch of the channel. Please tell that Dr. Subhash Chandra Agarwal is from the Bania family. He was born in Adampur, Haryana. Dr. Chandra’s initial days were very difficult. Due to a loan of Rs 3.5 lakh, the family could not afford his education. After leaving school, Dr. Chandra worked in the Food Corporation of India (FCI). And then joined his family business. While working, he gave his idea to store food grains in the open and cover them with special plastic sheets. Earlier the grain was stored in heavy load godowns. FCI was impressed by this idea and brought Swiss machines to India to make such sheets. However, without any expertise, more than 90% of the sheets went to waste. So he decided to send engineers to Switzerland to train him and start the construction process again. Along with this, he took inspiration from Disneyland in America and Dr. Chandra started his own adventure park.

He then bought land in North Mumbai in 1989 to build India’s first amusement park, Essel World. After Essel World and Zee TV, Dr. Chandra launched Dish TV, India’s first satellite television provider. He also came up with a new show called ‘Dr Subhash Chandra Show’ with the aim of motivating the youth.

Dr. Chandra is also honored with the Global Indian Entertainment Personality of the Year Award. He won the award in the year 2004. Other awards won by Chandra include Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award and Business Standard’s Businessman of the Year Award in 1999 and Indian News Broadcasting Award in 2010.
