The findings showed that using e-cigarettes containing nicotine resulted in immediate short-term changes. The team detected an average 23 percent increase in blood clotting after 15 minutes, which returned to normal levels after 60 minutes.

Gustaf Lietinen, a physician at Helsingborg Hospital and researcher at the institute, said using e-cigarettes containing nicotine has the same effect on the body as smoking conventional cigarettes. This effect on blood clotting is important, as we know it can clog and constrict blood vessels in the long run. This definitely puts people at risk of heart attack and stroke.

The researcher said that the harms of smoking traditional cigarettes, including the effects of nicotine on the body, are well known.
