In July, a total of 4.41 lakh new members were added to the social security schemes run by the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). This information has been given in the official information released on Friday. Last month, 8.13 lakh new members were added to these projects. The figures are part of a report released Friday by the National Statistics Office (NSO).
According to the data, the total number of new members who joined ESI in May this year was 47.61 lakh. In April 2020, this number stood at 2.6 million. The government imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 25 to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The unlock process has started since June. According to the pay-roll data released in May, 8.21 lakh new members were added from the ESIC-managed scheme in March 2020. In February, 11.33 lakh shareholders were associated with these projects.

According to the NSO report, a total of 1.51 crore new shareholders were added to ESI in 2012-2017. In the previous financial year, the figure was Rs 1.49 crore. From September 2017 to March 2018, 83.35 lakh new customers were connected to ESIC schemes. According to the report, the number of new members joining ESIC from September to July 2020 stood at Tk 4.07 crore.

The NSO report is based on the salary lists of new shareholders of various social security schemes run by ESIC, Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) and Pension Fund Control and Development Authority (PFRDA). It has been releasing data from these companies since April, 2018.
