(CNN) An American Airlines flight was forced to return to an airport in Columbus, Ohio, Sunday morning after an engine fire may have been caused by a possible bird strike.
The Federal Aviation Administration said Flight 1958, a Boeing 737, had taken off from Columbus to Phoenix before the crew reported a possible bird strike around 8 a.m. local time.
The plane returned safely to John Glenn Columbus International Airport, the FAA said.
“Emergency crews responded to a reported engine fire on a flight at CMH this morning. The flight landed safely and the airport is open and operational,” John Glenn Columbus International Airport said in a statement posted on Twitter.
The FAA is investigating.
The plane returned safely to Columbus “due to engine trouble.” American Airlines said in a statement.
“The aircraft landed normally and proceeded safely to the gate under its own power. The aircraft has been removed from service for maintenance and our team is attempting to get customers back on their way to Phoenix,” an American Airlines statement said.
